This energy can be generated by burning, fermenting or gasifying biomass. Bioenergy is used as green energy or fuel to generate green energy.

European Renewable Energy Directive
Produced in a sustainable manner
Biofuels, bioliquids and solid biomass should always be produced in a sustainable manner, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gases.
The European Renewable Energy Directive, established a regulatory framework for the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources and sets that the biomass used for biofuel or bioenergy must be produced in a sustainable manner and be monitored through independent verification.

National legislation
Broad range of certifications
Control Union has built up long-term relationships with all parties in the bio-based commodities supply chain and offers a broad range of biofuel and biomass certifications.
Most of these are based on directives or national legislation existing in Europe and the USA.
ISCC – Certified Biomass and Bioenergy
ISCC EU is the leading voluntary certification scheme based on the requirements of the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED) covering the environmental and social aspects of biomass production. It is an international certification system that confirms the responsible origin of raw materials, the transparency of supply chains and the reduction of the carbon footprint – from the field or collection point to the final product.

REDcert – Biomass for Energy
REDcert EU has originally been developed as one of the first voluntary schemes based on the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED). REDcert’s main focus is on European supply chains. This means that REDcert EU is mainly limited to application within European member states.

ENplus – Whole chain certification for wood pellets
The ENplus® scheme was initiated in 2010 and developed for assuring the quality of wood pellets for small furnaces. Today more than 1100 certified companies participate in the scheme.
